Games and play stimulate learning by promoting the development of imagination and curiosity. This can be done on line, but also by traditional outside at recess playing with others.
Would you let your child walk the streets of a city by themselves? Of course not. Then why would you let a child navigate the internet alone? Yet, how many parents do just that?
You teach your child how to safely cross a street, and when they are old enough and careful, you let them go by themselves. It is the same with the internet. You cannot and should not keep your children off the internet. Just as you should not keep them from going to the neighborhood park. So what should you do? Go with them. Teach them to be safe. Do not set them down in front of a computer while you do chores. Make computer time together time.
Let Children play more, mandatory physical education classes from kindergarten through high school. Encourage free thinking and problem solving. Both individually, and as a group. This will teach kids how to think and how to work together to achieve common goals, even if there are multiple points of view.
As a parent, get involved. Talk to your children about their day at school. Develop lines of communication with teachers and staff. Support the system. Vote for kids, not against them.
There are many life lessons that parents must teach their children. Hundreds, if not thousands of facts. Most importantly, parents should teach them three foundational philosophies.
Do the right thing.
Do the best you can.
Treat others the way you want to be treated.
If a child learns these three things, they will be ready to face all life may throw at them.
Reading opens doors and minds. It can take you to foreign lands, times past and times yet to come. Reading leads to writing, which requires you to organize and express yourself. Although logic dictates that writing developed before reading, imagine discovering that stories could be told by marks on a clay tablet, or papyrus. Imagine seeing a story in your mind because you could read those marks. Imagine.
